SDAG Trust has submitted a representation to the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department proposing key reforms to strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency in temple administration across Tamil Nadu.
SDAG Trust (Sanathana Dharma Action Group) submitted comprehensive reform proposals to Tamil Nadu's HR&CE Minister to overhaul temple administration state-wide. Dedicated to protecting Sanathana Dharma institutions, the Trust advocates structured governance improvements to enhance transparency, accountability, and public trust across thousands of state-managed temples.
The key areas highlighted in the representation include:
Implementation of Judicial Directions: Ensuring effective follow-up and compliance with Supreme Court and High Court judgments related to temple administration, property protection, audit standards, and devotees’ rights.
Financial Transparency: Advocating for the public disclosure of audited financial statements, audit reports, and compliance documentation for major temples.
Modern Accounting Systems: Introduction of standardized ERP-based financial management systems with double-entry accounting, enabling structured reporting such as balance sheets and income-expenditure statements.
Temple Asset Digitization: Creation of a centralized database for temple lands, properties, leases, encroachments, litigations, and heritage assets to strengthen monitoring and protection.
Capital Expenditure Review: Policy-level review of major expenditures, procurement processes, and contribution mechanisms to ensure alignment with statutory objectives and transparency norms.
Executive Officer Appointments: Emphasis on appointing qualified, experienced, and integrity-driven officers with sensitivity to temple traditions and administrative competence.
Asset Protection Mechanism: Proposal for a dedicated monitoring and coordination framework to address encroachments, litigation, and recovery of temple properties efficiently.
The Trust offered voluntary expertise from retired finance, audit, and administrative professionals to design these reforms through a collaborative framework with government officials and civil society. To advance this initiative and explore implementation, SDAG Trust requested a formal meeting with the Minister to present its proposals in detail.
